September 4 – 8, 2020  (Please note that the date has been pushed back due to COVID19)

The practice of making art involves careful observations of both outer (natural) and inner (experienced) phenomena and translating those observations into forms of expression. In this retreat, we will use the meditative practice of visual art as a complement to our spiritual explorations, as a way to hone our awareness of the natural world and our experienced relationship to it. Jan will offer gentle guided meditations, land-based contemplative practices, and inner landscape journeys. Ilana will support participants’ creative expression of their experiences through watercolor and drawing practice.

We invite you to sink deeply into your true Self in connection with Nature. There will be plenty of free time to relax, hike, swim in the pond and soak in the hot tub. We will enjoy delicious, organic meals. This retreat is designed for restoration, renewal, and fun! ABSOLUTELY no experience with art is needed – all levels are welcome!

You will leave feeling restored and refreshed and will bring home some images that reflect your experience. All art materials will be provided, AND you will get to take home a lovely watercolor kit and high-quality paper notebook so that you might continue to practice the process of sight and insight after our time together.

The retreat takes place in the spectacular rolling hills of Mendocino at the Bell Valley Retreat Center outside of Boonville, CA. The center encompasses 650 acres of oak woodland, madrone, and pine forest, with a turquoise pond for swimming, a seasonal creek, and a wide variety of accommodations.

The retreat will be facilitated by a mother and daughter teaming up for the first time!

Jan Edl Stein, MFT

Jan Edl Stein, MFT, is a depth-oriented psychotherapist and ecotherapist in private practice who has lead many retreats and workshops over the last 25 years.  Jan is the director of Holos Institute and co-teacher of the Ecopsychology Certificate Program. Jan has a sincere connection to the spiritual aspects of the natural world and long-time meditation and nature-based contemplative practice.

Ilana Stein is a tropical field biologist by profession (Ph.D. candidate in Integrative Biology, UC Berkeley), but also an artist by passion. Her art and her interest in biology both stem from a deep love of nature and a lifelong search for truth through connection with the natural world. Ilana studied drawing, oil painting and various other mediums as an undergraduate, but more recently has discovered a great fondness for the fluidity of watercolor.
