Holos 2018 Ecopsychology Conference

Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Earthrise Retreat Center (IONs)
9:00 am – 5:30 pm
Earthrise Retreat Center, Petaluma

Conference Theme: “Biodiversity: Embracing our Interdependence

Bill Plotkin, PhD., is our keynote speaker

The 2018 Holos Institute Ecopsychology Conference brings together a community of clinicians, healing arts professionals, and others who share concern for the environment to forge a way forward in these challenging times. Together we will create community, explore collaboration, refine ideas, and engender hope and resilience. We will be looking at the role of an evolving psychology to meet the challenges of a changing environmental and socio-political climate and exploring the importance of biodiversity for a sustainable life on earth. This year we are drawing upon the field of depth psychology to inform the intricate relationship of psyche and nature.

Come join us in this wonderful a chance to connect and build community!

We will be offering an array of inspiring speakers, experiential workshops and presentations on applications of ecopsychology.
We have a line-up of wonderful speakers, including Bill Plotkin, Geneen Marie Haugen, Barbara Holifield, Rob Fisher, Renee Soule and many others. We will be meeting on the gorgeous campus of the Earthrise Retreat Center which is part of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, 30 minutes north of San Francisco, just south of Petaluma. Situated on 195 acres of oak studded rolling hills, the campus includes an old oak grove, a labyrinth, lovely gardens and hiking trails – all of which we will access during the post-lunch breakout workshops. This year we have extending the conference time along with the duration of the post-lunch breakout sessions. There will be an opportunity to browse books and publications by presenters and attendees and generally network amongst like-minded, eco-conscious folk.

Lunch is included in the registration and is a wonderful time to mingle with like-minded souls and enjoy the signature fine organic food for which Earthrise is well known.  We will have a few tables reserved for specific topical conversations.

~ We are committed to assisting, as best as possible, in forming carpools and ride-shares.
~ We are also committed to making this as affordable as possible – if you have a financial need, reach out to us via email with your situation /need. We have a limited number of work/trade positions available where we might be able to offer a partial discount in exchange for some very basic and simple help. These positions are offered on a first come, first received basis so let us know soon if you need support.

A post-conference workshop will be lead by Geneen Marie Haugen and Bill Plotkin:
Exploring the Wild Landscapes of the Human Psyche: An Experiential Immersion for Human Development Facilitators
Sunday, March 25 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Earthrise Retreat Center, Petaluma, CA

The wild human psyche holds treasures and troubles, portals and obstacles, gifts and shadows that we might not know exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers and potentials, and eventually integrate them into our everyday lives. We’ll experientially explore the four dimensions of our innate human wholeness and identify the four kinds of self-protective subpersonalities that supported us in childhood but are now barriers to our full and authentic humanity. Cultivating our multifaceted wild minds and uncovering the gifts of our subpersonalities also constitute the best preparation for the descent to soul — the initiatory journey that reveals the larger, mythic story we’re called to live and enables us to serve the greater Earth community as visionary artisans of cultural evolution. We’ll explore the landscapes of the wild mind through a variety of soulcraft practices such as creative expression, solo exercises while wandering on the land, voice dialogue, journaling, and deep imagination. This experiential offering supports personal development but also introduces new tools for ecotherapists, psychotherapists, graduate students, and others.

Group size will be limited. Priority admission and discount to this workshop is given to conference participants registering concurrently with the conference. Singular registration in this workshop will be made available as a separate sign-up on Feb 15, 2018 as space is available.  Conference participants may register for the workshop when registering for the conference starting now.

Cultivating Our Original Human Wholeness: An Eco-Depth Approach to Human Development and Cultural Regeneration

The key to individual and cultural health is not primarily or merely to recover from addictions or trauma, manage stress, or fight “mental illness,” but rather to rewild ourselves — to reclaim the original wholeness of our multifaceted human psyches, commit ourselves to the largest, soul-infused story we’re capable of living, and serve the greater Earth community. This approach to human development is both ancient and very new and is rooted in the hidden depths of the human psyche and in our inherent kinship with all other creatures of our self-organizing world. The cultivation of our innate wholeness (including our capacity for self-healing) and our passion to serve the world with our unique genius might be the most essential elements of human development and cultural regeneration, and perhaps ought to be the priority not only in ecotherapy (and psychotherapy, more generally), but also in medicine, education, religion, and activism.

10:45     BREAK
11:00     Biodiversity in the Imaginal World: Tending the Anima Mundi by  Geneen Marie Haugen, PhD,

In the nightworld, we encounter strange creatures and unfamiliar landscapes; in the dayworld, dream-like images or impressions sometimes arise unbidden, as if we inhabit a curious, imaginal world, parallel to our everyday lives.  Unexpected impressions might be especially activated when we wander in wild nature, as if – as has been said – the world speaks to us through image.  We can cultivate receptivity to the biodiverse presences of the imaginal world, and in this way, we enliven our own psyches as well as  tend the anima mundi.

Bill is the author of Soulcraft: Crossing into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche (an experiential guidebook), Nature and the Human Soul (a nature-based stage model of human development), and Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche (an ecocentric map of the psyche). His doctorate in psychology is from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Learn more about Bill and Animas at http://www.animas.org.

Geenen Marie Haugen, PhD., grew up a little wild, with a run-amok imagination.  As a guide to the intertwined mysteries of nature and psyche (www.animas.org), she delights in multidimensional listening, and in offering perceptive questions, ceremonies, escapades and reflections that help expand a sense of our own possibilities as individuals (and as a species), and deepen our experience of participation with an intelligent, animate Earth/cosmos.  Her writing has appeared in many anthologies and journals, including Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth; Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth; Written River; Parabola Journal; Kosmos; Langscape; Ecopsychology; and High Country News. A former tipi-dweller and whitewater river guide, she now lives amidst the creatures and features of southern Utah’s sandstone labyrinth. BREAKOUT WORKSHOPS

Please note, that we are currently accepting proposals for these workshops and so the final offering is not complete.  What follows is a listing of currently accepted proposals.

The Power of Ecotherapy, Mindfulness and Compassion Practices with Rob Fisher, MFT and Hu Ting Ting, MA.
Mindfulness and compassion practices in a natural setting bring an enhanced impact that goes to the heart of any exploration and connects participants to the power and depth of nature. In this 90 minute session we will present some approaches that can be used in solo journeys, group events and with individual clients that will allow you to go deeply and gently on a personal journey into the natural environment, your heart and your psyche. We will explain, demonstrate and you can experience several specific practices that you can easily use on your own.

Being Gaia with Laura Parker, MFT
We will gather outside for a (very brief) introductory talk, guided meditation, eyes-closed exploration, and group sharing. The meditation (which will be recorded and made available) will guide you into a Gaian way of being that is somatic, holistic, immediate, infinitely open, non-conceptual, multi-dimensional, and vibrating with alert, responsive participation. From that place, you will be invited to engage in your own self-directed exploration. Finally, we will share our experience with the other humans in our group without using words.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  DECEMBER 15, 2017

We seek to offer embodied and spirited presentations that illustrate, illuminate and facilitate a deep connection to the natural world.  We welcome scholarly presentations that delineate the edge of personal/world that eco-psychology strives to define if there is a heartfelt presence in the material.  We look for creative and clearly instructive applications of ecopsychology. Please be mindful and avoid adopting techniques or teachings from cultures other than your own.

Our 2018 program is mostly filled but several potential presenters are still yet unconfirmed.  We have room for additional speakers, experiential workshops and leaders of a topical conversation table at lunchtime.  If you’d like to engage a conversation but don’t feel ready to take on a full presentation, consider hosting a lunch table conversation.
Accepted presenters (not including lunch table topic leaders) may attend the conference for free.  Any co-leaders of a workshop presentation may attend for half price fee.
Holos will provide logistical support to all presenters.  Most presentations will be video recorded and presenters must agree to allow Holos to record and publish these presentations as well as possibly take photos of your presentations to use later on on our website and promotions.  You will have access to any image or video recording of your program.
All presenters may bring literature and/or books for sale.
